Grow your understanding and skills by studying and generating letterforms by hand and via computer. Learn essential terminology, type classification and historical background of fonts and families. Focus on type proportion, hierarchy, legibility, composition and structure. Emphasis is placed on the formal aspects of designing with typographic elements and effective visual communication using letterforms. Solve typographic design problems and develop aesthetics.
James Bowman has worked as an Art Director and Designer in various capacities, from agency to in-house, over the past 20 years. He currently maintains a freelance practice doing print and digital work for a select client list. Passionate about education, he began teaching design in 2002. Seeing so many students flourish and succeed ranks among his most rewarding life experiences. James has been an active part of the creative community through volunteer work and as a past member of the AIGA San Diego board of directors. Outside of the office, he enjoys surfing, vintage drums, guitars, Blue Note records, good tea, and Saturday mornings with his wife and daughter.
Ami is a mover, shaker, and designer who relocated to San Diego from New York City. Her passion for social justice advocacy is put into action through her job at Raygun, an impact-driven creative studio. Ami's life experiences as a professional acrobat, dance company director, and supermom add a unique perspective to her design work. An alumni of East Carolina University and San Diego City College, she is excited to infuse her diverse experiences into the San Diego City College Graphic Design team.
